Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic, is also a public speaking event organizer. She founded Feminist Frequency which hosts videos and commentary analyzing depictions of women's roles in popular cultural. Anita Sarkeesian has been a blogger, critic of the media and award-winning feminist for over a decade. Feminist Frequency is a site to educate women about their roles in pop culture narratives It is the brainchild of Anita Sarkeesian. She also serves as the executive director. Alongside working to expose the issues surrounding the targeted and sexist attacks on women, other minorities in online spaces she is dedicated to breaking down the stigmas and stereotypes associated with popular culture. With a master's in social and political thought at York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after presenter and has presented talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival as well as at The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. While a student at university she became concerned about issues related to gender identity and women's rights from a young age. An ambitious woman who wanted to launch a web-series that would examine the representation of gender in video games was targeted in an internet-based campaign. The attack did not stop her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered her determination as a feminist critic of media. She has won numerous awards to recognize her significant contributions to the world of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winning media journalist. She also serves as the founder and director of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit group that focuses on pop-culture depictions of women.
