
Hanks His next role was as an astronaut and commanding officer Jim Lovell in the 1995 docudrama Apollo 13. This reunited him again with Ron Howard. The film was widely lauded by critics, as well as the performance of the whole cast (which included Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris) and Kathleen Quinlan. The film received nominations for the Academy Awards nine times and it won two. Hanks later starred as Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated animation film Toy Story (1995). His directorial debut came a year later in The Thing You Do! (1996) which chronicles the rise and fall of a music group from the 1960s. Hanks also played in the role of music producer. Richard Schickel of Time magazine called his performance "charming", and most reviewers agreed with the fact that Hanks' portrayal ensured him a place in the best romantic comedy actors of his generation.
